Spacey Calls for ACE Subsidy
As he announced details of his first season as artistic director of the Old Vic, Kevin Spacey added his voice to those who are calling for support from Arts Council England for maintaining listed commercial theatres. Recognising that it is the theatre's responsibility to fund its programming and productions, he said, "“We would like to make a reasonable argument [to ACE] as to why they should help us [to maintain the fabric of the bulding]."

Starlight Express to Tour
Starlight Express is to tour nationally for the first time, beginning on 1st November, when it opens at the Manchester Opera House. It will then go on to Sunderland, Bristol, Oxford, Edinburgh, Southampton and Liverpool, with more dates to be announced later.

A Masterclass with Branagh
You could have a one-to-one two hour private Shakespeare masterclass with Kenneth Branagh: all you have to do is make the right donation to charity. Branagh is offering his services as a private drama coach as a reward for making the biggest donation to the Paul Bevan Cancer Foundation, of which is is a patron. The winner of the auction will also receive a copy of the Complete Works signed by Branagh.

Bombay Dreams on Broadway
Bombay Dreams opens at the Broadway Theatre, New York, this week in a new version. Because the producers feel that American audiences will not have the familiarity with Bollywood musicals that British audiences have, the references have been taken out of the script and the concentration is now on the hero. New songs have also been added and there has been some considerable reworking of the book.

The Holy Terror to Close Early
Simon Gray's The Holy Terror, starring Simon Callow, is to close on 8th May. It opened at the Duke of York's on 14th April (previewing from 8th) and was booking until August. It is the second show in succession to close at the theatre: Michael Hasting's Calico closed on 3rd April, eight weeks early.
