West End Cabaret
Revival
Bill Kenwright is to produce and Rufus Norris to direct a West End revival
of Kander and Ebb's Cabaret. No further details are yet available.
The original West End production opened at the Palace Theatre in 1968
and ran for 336 performances. It starred Judi Dench as Sally Bowles.
Sam Mendes revived and re-invented the show at the Donmar Warehouse
in 1993 with Alan Cumming, who won a Tony when the production transferred
to Broadway, as the MC.
New Friel Play in West
End Transfer
Biran Friel's latest play, The Home Place, which premiered at
Dublin's Gate Theatre in February, is to transfer to the Comedy Theatre
on 25th May (previews from 7th and booking until 27th August). Directed
by Adrian Noble, it stars Tom Courtenay, Derbhle Crotty and Hugh O'Conor.
The year is 1878. The widowed Christopher Gore, his son David and the
woman they are both in love with, their housekeeper Margaret, live in
The Lodge in Ballybeg. But in this era of unrest at the dawn of Home
Rule, the seemingly serene life enjoyed at The Lodge is threatened by
the arrival of Christophers English cousin, who unwittingly ignites
deep animosity among the villagers of Ballybeg.
It will replace Whose Life Is It, Anyway?, starring Kin Cattrall,
which is due to close on 30th April.
Joseph:
Extension, Not Closure
Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat, produced and directed by Bill Kenwright, which announced
in January that it would close on 2nd April, is now booking at the New
London Theatre to 27th August.
It was announced earlier this week that its star, Darren Day, was leaving
because of vocal problems but industry gossip cites his split with co-star
Suzanne Shaw as a major factor. He and the ex-Hear'Say singer, who plays
the Narrator, had a child last year and Day is reported to have said
that he "doesn't do family".
The role of Joseph is currently played by Simon Gorton.
Bart Simpson Comes
to the Riverside
Popular - although not critical - success of the 2004 Edinburgh Fringe,
Nancy Cartwrights's My Life As a Ten Year Old Boy, a show built
around her role as Bart Simpson in the TV cartoon series, comes to the
Riverside Studios from 24th to 29th May.
New Bloom at Drury
Lane
John Gordon Sinclair will take over the part of Bloom in The Producers
at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane from 25th May when Lee Evans leaves
the cast.
Although best known for the film Gregory's Girl (1981), Sinclair
is no stranger to the musical stage, having won an Olivier for his lead
role in the musical She Loves Me (1995).
