Berkoff Backs Rosebud
Steven Berkoff is one of the backers of a new production of Rosebud:
the Lives of Orson Welles by Welsh writer Mark Jenkins which
won a Fringe First when it played at the Assembly Rooms in 2004. Produced
by Andy Jordan Productions, it has additional financial backing from
David Pierce Hughes, Pembrokeshire artist, publisher and businessman,
whose company MOGO made the first Rosebud production possible.
Commenting on the news of Berkoff's involvement, Jenkins wrote, "What
an honour! Ive always been a huge fan of Steven Berkoffs
work. I saw Greek in the West End and a packed house rose to
its feet with a unanimous roar of approval at the end. Quite right,
too! One of the greatest contemporary plays ever staged."
Rosebud will run at the King's Head from 20th December.
Turner in Woolf
Kathleen Turner returns to the West End in January when Anthony Page's
Broadway production of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
transfers to the Apollo from 31st January (previews from 20th) to 13th
May 2006. Also in the cast is Bill Irwin who won the Tony for Best Performance
by a Leading Actor in a Play for his performance as George. Co-starring
as Nick and Honey are David Harbour and Mireille Enos.
Another Page production, Tennessee Williams' The Night of the Iguana,
starring Woody Harrelson and Clare Higgins, opens at the neighbouring
Lyric Theatre on 5th December.
Pinter Will Not Collect
Personally
Because of health problems, Harold Pinter will not go to Stockholm on
10th December to collect his Nobel Prize in person. The 75-year old
playwright, who is is recovering from cancer of the oesophagus, will
be represented by his publisher Stephen Page. He will, however, give
a lecture, which will be broadcast live in the UK, to the Swedish Academy
on 7th December.
Minghella Butterfly
Sells Out
Anthony Minghella's production of Puccini's Madame Butterfly
for English National Opera at the Coliseum has completely sold out.
However tickets are now available for the revival on 29th April and
5th, 10th, 12th, 16th, 25th, 27th and 31st May, 2006.
Mary Plazas sings Madame Butterfly and Gwyn Hughes Jones Lieutenant
Pinkerton.
Woman in White
Reaches 500
The Woman in White will have its 500th performance tomorrow (Monday
28th November) at the Palace Theatre and a new Count Fosco, David Burt,
will join the existing cast.
Williams Writes at
the Almeida
Roy Williams, author of Little
Sweet Thing, Starstruck, Fall
Out and Sing Yer
Heart Out For The Lads and of Babyfather on television,
and winner of the 2001 Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright,
has been appointed writer-in-residence at the Almeida Theatre.
He has also been commissioned to write a new play for the theatre.
Redgrave, Djerassi
and Berkoff at New End
New plays by Lyn Redgrave, Carl Djerassi and Steven Berkoff all feature
in the soring season at Hampstead's New End Theatre. Redgrave's Nightingale,
a one-woman play starring Caroline John which Redgrave also directed,
is based upon the life of Beatrice Kempson, Redgraves maternal
grandmother. It runs from 17th January to 219th Feburary.
Djerassi's play is Taboos, here having its London premiere,
which deals with contemporary sexual behaviour, an appropriate subject
for the inventor of the contraceptive pill.
Finally Berkoff's new play, which he will also direct, is a family
drama, Sit And Shiver.
Fever
to Close
Saturday Night Fever (Apollo Victoria) is to close on 18th February.
