Cox to Star in Edinburgh
Chekhov Reworking
Brian Cox is to star in a new version of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya,
relocated to northeast Scotland in 1964and renamed Uncle Varick,
at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. The new version is written
and designed by John Byrne, whose trilogy The
Slab Boys was recently revived just round the corner at the
Traverse, and will be directed by Lyceum artistic director Mark Thomson.
Two More for the Donmar
Two more productions have been announced in the Donmar's summer 2004
season. From 7th July to 4th September (previews from 1st July) Jeremy
Northam and Gina McKee will star in a revival of Pinter's Old Times
(1971), which will be directed by Roger Mitchell.
Following that, from 14th September to 13h November (previews from
9th September), Clare Higgins will star in Jonathan Kent's production
of Euripides' Hecuba, in a new version by Frank McGuinness.
As already announced, Michael Grandage will then direct Grand Hotel,
from 29th November 2004 to 12th February 2005.
Callow Back in the
West End
Simon Callow returns to the West End next month when the touring production
of Simon Gray's The Holy Terror moves into the Duke of York's.
Hytner on the Beeb
Tomorrow (Monday, 29th March) BBC4 will broadcast an interview with
Nicholas Hytner on his first year at the National Theatre. The interviewer
will be arts broadcaster Kirsty Wark and the programme will air at 8.30.
Godot at the
Tricycle
The Godot Company's version of Beckett's Waiting for Godot,
playing at the Bloomsbury Theatre until 3rd April, will play at the
Tricycle in Kilburn from 10th to 15th May.
Coyote
to Transfer to the West End
Coyote on a Fence, Bruce Grahams new play which is currently
receiving its European premiere at the Royal Exchange, Manchester, will
transfer to the the Duchess on 28th April (previews from 22nd). Dealing
with two convicts on Death Row, it stars Alex Ferns and Ben Cross.
Whitehall to become
Two?
The Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) is to apply for planning permission
to make major internal changes to the Whitehall Theatre, converting
the 650-seat theatre into two spaces, a 380-seat main house and a 96-seater
studio space under the current auditorium.
Rattle
to be Revived
Michelle Collins and Stephen Tompkinson are to star in a revival of
Charles Dyer's Rattle of a Simple Man at the Comedy Theatre.
Directed by John Caird, it will open on 11th May (previews from 6th).
It will initially book to 28th August.
Gone to Earth
with Shared Experience
Shared Experience is to tour Helen Edmundson's Gone to Earth,
based on the 1916 novel by Mary Webb, to Guildford, Southampton, Cambridge,
Ollerton, Bristol and Oxford, after it finishes its run at the Gardner
Arts Centre, Brighton, where it opened on 25th March. It will also have
a four-week run at the Lyric, Hammersmith, from 11th May to 5th June.
Dreams Out,
Fever In
Bombay Dreams (Apollo Victoria) is to close in June (it is currently
booking to 13th), to make way for Saturday Night Fever which
arrives on 6th July after an extended national tour.
Bombay Dreams opens at the Broadway Theater, New York, on 29th
April (previews from 29th March) with a revised book, and producer Andrew
Lloyd Webber intends to take this version on a national tour of the
UK in early 2005 before it eventually transfers to the West End later
in the year. He is reported to be excited by the changes which have
been made to the script, score and set foer the US version and wants
to bring the re-worked show to the UK.
Donovan to Return to
Chitty
Jason Donovan will return to play Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty
Bang Bang at the London Palladium from 7th September. The length
of his run in the show has not yet been announced.
Thirty Years at St
Martin's
The Mousetrap has celebrated thirty years of performances at
the St Martin's Theatre, where it opened in 1974. It began life in 1952
at the Ambassadors.
Only Fools and Horses
Is Best Sitcom
Only Fools and Horses, starring David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst,
has been voted the best ever British sitcom by one and a half million
viewers. The final ten and the votes they received were:
- Only Fools and Horses (22.2%)
- Blackadder (18.3%)
- Vicar of Dibley (13.8%)
- Dad's Army (11.3%)
- Fawlty Towers (11.2%)
- Yes Minister (8%)
- Porridge (6.1%)
- Open All Hours (4.4%)
- The Good Life (2.6%)
- One Foot in the Grave (2%)
Beckham in Hollywood?
England football star David Beckham is understood to be likely to take
a small role in the remake of the Peter Sellars classic The Pink
Panther. He will play himself.
Extending/Closing/Transferring
The following extensions and closures have been announced:
- Adrenalin... heart (Bush) extends until 10th April.
- Calico (Duke of York's) will close on 3rd April
- Journey's End (Comedy) will transfer to the Playhouse from
3rd May.
