Attacks on My Wife Made Me Leave, Says Noble
In an interview in the "London Evening Standard", RSC director Adrian Noble claims that it was attacks on his wife from within the company which made him decide to quit his post. "Yes," he said, "I have been hurt by the attacks, but that's part of the territory. But also people have been very unpleasant to my wife, and that is unacceptable." However he would not say who had made the attacks.

His wife is ex-RSC actress Joanne Pearce.

Dillane to Star in New Stoppard Trilogy
Stephen Dillane, whose last stage appearance was cancelled after one month, is to star in Tom Stoppard's new trilogy The Coast of Utopia at the National Theatre. Also in the cast will be Eve Best, John Carlisle, Raymond Coulthard, Janine Duvitski, Charlotte Emmerson, Guy Henry, Douglas Henshall and Anna Maxwell-Martin. The trilogy will be directed by Trevor Nunn.

The Coast of Utopia - Voyage, Shipwreck and Salvage - will open at the Olivier on 3rd August 2002 (previews from 27th June).

Michael Bryant Dies
Actor Michael Bryant has died in his sleep at the age of 74. He had been suffering from cancer for some time.

A former member of the English Stage Company and the RSC, he is best known for his work with the National Theatre. His last appearance there was in 2000 when he played Firs in The Cherry Orchard in 2000 with Corin and Vanessa Redgrave.

Another Law Injury Stops Faustus
An injury to Jude Law's hand has forced the cancellation of another two performances of Dr Faustus at the Young Vic. He hurt his hand during the performance on 25th April and the evening performance on the 26th and the matinee on the 27th had to be cancelled.

Three Madonna Previews Cancelled
The first three previews of Up for Grabs, Madonna's West End debut at the Wyndhams have been cancelled because of technical problems but three additional performances have been added to enable fans to see the show. The cancelled performances are on 9th to 11th May, and they will be replaced by performances on 13th may and 6th and 13th July.

Lobby Hero to Transfer
Kenneth Lonergan's Lobby Hero, currently at the Donmar, is to transfer to the New Ambassadors on 26th June, following the closure of The Vagina Monologues on 22nd. It will play for eight weeks only.

Next at the SJT
The spring/summer season at Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre has been announced:

  • The Safari Party (Tim Firth) - 25th April to 18th May 2002
  • Happy Birthday, Dear Alice (Bernard Farrell) - 22nd May to 6th July
  • Snake in the Grass (Alan Ayckbourn - premiere) - 30th May to 7th September
  • Joking Apart (Alan Ayckbourn - revival) - 11th July to 7th September

Brecht at King's Cross
Happy End, a little-known musical by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, is to be performed in the Central Station bar in King's Cross station from 17th May to 8th June (previews from 14th May) in a promenade production.

The Real Thing to Tour
Alan Strachan's production of Stoppard's The Real Thing, starring John Gordon Sinclair, is to tour. Opening at Plymouth's Theatre Royal on 15th may, it will then play at Guildford, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Milton Keynes, Bradford, Cheltenham, Norwich and Nottingham.

Little Angel to Close
The Little Angel, the oldest puppet theatre in the UK, is to close next week, possibly permanently. Its patron and benefactor has died and Islington Council has slashed its funding.

Benefactors for the Albery
The revival of Michael Frayn's Benefactors, starring Neil Pearson, will opn at the Albery on 25th June (previews from 19th). It will follow the junk-opera Shockheaded Peter into the West End venue.

Umoja Will Open Again
The South Afrian musical Umoja, which was closed at the Shaftesbury after a Noise Abatement order was issued, will reopen at the Queen's on 4th June.

Night Heron Extends
Jez Butterworth's The Night Heron (Royal Court Theatre Downstairs) has extended its run until 18th May.

Van Outen Returns
Denise van Outen will resume the role of Roxy Hart in Chicago on 29th April, after finishing her run in the Broadway production.
