Donmar Mary Stuart
for the West End
The Donmar Warehouse production of Schiller's Mary
Stuart is to transfer to the Apollo in October. Janet McTeer
as Mary Queen of Scots and Harriet Walter as Elizabeth I, along with
Tam Dean Burn, Stephen Fletcher, David Horovitch, Rory Kinnear and Rufus
Wright, will also transfer with the production..
It will open on 19th October (previews from 7th) and will run until
14th January, 2006.
The production is directed by Phyllida Lloyd, with design by Anthony
Ward, lighting by Hugh Vanstone and sound by Paul Arditti.
Thaw Fraudster Jailed
A convicted Liverpool criminal who attempted to benefit from the death
of actor John Thaw has been jailed for fifteen months for fraud.
Donald Vernon Knox Richards persuaded experts, fans and writers to
contribute essays for his book John Thaw: An Appreciation but
failed to pay them the total of £20,000 owed. When threatened
with legal action, he revealed that he was declared bankrupt in April
2002. He was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court under section 360 (1)
of the Insolvency Act 1986 for not revealing his bankruptcy and it was
then revealed in court that he has convictions for fraud going back
to 1961 and has served numerous prison sentences.
Jermyn Street Birthday
Gala
The Jermyn Street Theatre will celebrate its tenth birthday with a Gala
at the Criterion Theatre on 11th September. Appearing will be artists
who have performed at the venue during the ten years of its life and
the Gala will be attended by HRH Princess Michael of Kent.
Among those appearing will be Joanna Lumley, Terence Stamp, Gyles Brandreth,
Issy Van Randwyck, Peter Polycarpou, Bonnie Langford,and the host will
be Nickolas Grace.
Tickets are priced from £25 to £100 (which includes an
invitation to after-show party) and the money raised will be spent on
upgrading the air conditioning and replacing the carpets.
Unnamed Play Sells
Out
All 16,000 advance tickets Mike Leigh's as yet unnamed play, due at
the National Theatre from 8th September, have been sold, it has been
announced. There will, however, be some tickets available for sale each
day.
Leigh creates his plays by working with his actors to develop characters
and plot lines and it is only late in the priocess that the script is
written and the play named.
August Wilson
African-American playwright August Wilson has revealed that he has cancer
and has been told he has a life expectancy of three to five months.
He has just completed his cycle of ten plays about the Black American
experience during the twentieth century. Radio Golf premiered
in April in New Haven and is currently playing in Los Angeles.
Closing/Extending
The following have announced early closures:
- The Big Life (Apollo) will close on 1st October. It was booking
to 5th November.
- The Postman Always Rings Twice (Playhouse) will close one
week early on 3rd September, due, a statement from the producers says,
to Val Kilmer's film commitments being changed.
Meanwhile the following have announced extensions to their booking
periods:
- Les Miserables (Queen's) is now booking to 16th December,
2006
- Stomp (Vaudeville) now booking to 26th February, 2006
