Paines Plough Southwark
Residency
Paines Plough is to be resident at the Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark
for its final season under artistic director Vicky Featherstone before
she moves on to become the first director of the National Theatre of
Scotland. The season will consist of four plays from a series of nine
commissioned ny Paines Plough and inspired by Melvyn Braggs radio
programme The Roots of English. Each play takes language as its
starting point.
The four plays are The Small Things (Enda Walsh), Pyrenees
(David Greig), Mercury Fur (Philip Ridley) and If Destroyed
True (Douglas Maxwell). Called This Other England, the season
begins in February 2005.
Far Pavilions
for the West End
MM Kaye's historical novel The Far Pavilions, set in the India
of the British Raj, is bound for the West End as a musical. It will
open at the Shaftesbury Theatre on 14th April 2005, following previews
from 24th March.
The show will have music by Philip Henderson and book and lyrics by
Stephen Clark. It will be designed by Lez Brotherston and directed by
Gale Edwards.
Spacey's Co-stars Announced
Kevin Spacey's co-stars for his first acting appearance at the Old Vic
since taking over as artistic director have been announced. They are
Mary Stuart Masterson and Steven Weber.
The production - National Anthems by Dennis McIntyre - will
be directed by David Grindley. It will open on 8th February (previwing
from 1st) and will run until 23rd April.
Mirren Gets Naturist
Award
Helen Mirren has been named Naturist of the Year by British Naturism,
the main British organisation for naturism. The award, an engraved rose
bowl, was made because she "made her love of a naturist lifestyle
public."
Calling it a great honour, Mirren said, "I do believe in naturism
and am my happiest on a nude beach with people of all ages and races."
Dennis and Langrishe in Shaffer
Comedian Les Dennis and Caroline Langrishe are to co-star in Anthony
Shaffer's Murderer at the Menier Chocolate Factory from 17th November
(previews from 10th) to 22 January, 2005.
Whose Life?
Casting
The full cast of Whose Life Is It Anyway? (which opens at the
Comedy on 7th January) will be Kim Catrall, Janet Suzman, Ann Mitchell,
William Chubb, Amita Dhiri, Alexander Siddig, Jotham Annan, Rachel Bavidge
and Emma Lowndes.
