Amy Nuttall and Christopher Cazenove in My Fair Lady

My Fair Lady in Sunderland

Trevor Nunn's National Theatre production of My Fair Lady, with musical staging by Matthew Bourne and sets and costumes by Anthony Ward, will play at Sunderland Empire from Tuesday 7th to Saturday 27th May 2006. Tickets go on sale at 10.00am on Monday 7th November.

The production originally opened at the Lyttelton in March 2001, where it ran for three months, before it transferred to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in July 2001. The production opened to a record-breaking advance in the history of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and went on to win a total of five Olivier Awards, including Outstanding Musical Production and Best Theatre Choreographer for Matthew Bourne. In 2002 it also received The Hilton Award for Outstanding Musical Production.

Christopher Cazenove will star as Professor Higgins, Amy Nuttall and Lisa O’Hare will share the role of Eliza Doolittle, Gareth Hale will star as Alfred P Doolittle, Stephen Moore as Colonel Pickering, Stephen Carlile as Freddy Eynsford Hilland Romy Baskerville as Mrs Pearce.

Newcastle Gears Up for the RSC

Newcastle's Theatre Royal goes dark this week as it prepares for the annual Royal Shakespeare Company three week season in the city. Three of Shakespeare's comedies - A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night and The Comedy of Errors - play at the Royal, whilst the Gunpowder season - Thomas More, A New Way to Please You, Believe What You Will, Sejanus: His Fall and Frank McGuinness' new play Speaking Like Magpies is at the People's Theatre. As part of the season, Live Theatre plays host to David Greig's The American Pilot.

Babel's Macbeth at the Gala

Theatre Babel bring their award-winning production of Macbeth to Durham's Gala this week. It opens on Tuesday and runs until Saturday, with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday.

The Gala's director Simon Stallworthy comments: "Macbeth never fails to astound and amaze me. I've directed two productions and seen several more, and still see something new every time I encounter this fabulous play. I can't wait to see this version by one of the most exciting companies working in the UK today."

The Customs House, South Shields

361 Performances in 363 Days

That's the proud record of South Shields' Customs House during the year from 1st April 2004 to 31st March 2005, according to the Trustees' Annual Report. In all, 196,723 people took advantage of the venue's facilities, whether visiting the theatre, cinema or gallery, or taking part in Arts Development or Creative Partnerships projects. More than 50,000 (18,000 up on the previous year) took part in Arts Development Schemes.

  • The League of Gentlemen invade the Sunderland Empire on Friday and Saturday
  • At Whitley Bay Playhouse on Thursday, Red Shift Theatre presents Get Carter, part of the Theatre for Grown-Ups Season
  • Get Carter also plays at the Darlington Arts Centre on Tuesday and, on the same night, Ian Dickens Productions' version of Gaslight opens at the Darlington Civic Theatre.
