News from the North East

Tom Hadaway Festival
The North East's leading playwright Tom Hadaway, who this year reached his 80th birthday, is to be celebrated in a month long festival, which opens on 3rd and continues until 30th October. It will be preceded by a Tyne Tees Television programme, Hadaway in Conversation, on Sunday 28th September at 2.00 pm.

Hadaway was brought up on the Ridges Estate in North Shields (now the notorious Meadowell) and worked on the North Shields Fish Quay. It was not until he was forty that he started writing. Most of his plays were premiered by Newcastle's Live Theatre and the BBC have broadcast eight of his television plays, including two of the Play for Today series, God Bless Thee, Jacky Maddison (1974) and The Happy Hunting Ground (1976). He also wrote one of the episodes of series When the Boat Comes In.

The festival includes showings of all his film and some of his television work, as well as productions of many of his plays by amateur and professional companies in the region. The programme consists of:
