Autumn in the North East

Hot on the heels of the announcement of the new seasons at the Newcastle Theatre Royal and the Gala in Durham, comes news of the autumn shows at the Sunderland Empire and the Customs House, South Shields.

The Empire, which is programmed and run by Clear Channel, offers a mixed programme, from major West End musicals to one-night stands.

The Wizard of Oz

Dorothy Gale has been working at the Red Shoe Diner on the edge of Kansas for over a month now, and it never gets any easier. Bad tempered owner, Esme West, makes Dorothy's life miserable. She wishes Esme wasn't so mean, and imagines one day she will leave Kansas behind for a new, more colorful life. But will a chance meeting with a traveling illusionist make Dorothy's dreams come true? Stars Ken Morley (Coronation Street), Colin White (Grange Hill) and the star of BBC TV's Tracey Beaker Dani Harmer.

Triple Bill and Hobson's Choice

Triple Bill - Three ballets from leading 20th Century choreographers: in de Valois' Checkmate the beautiful Black Queen mercilessly sweeps aside all opponents; in Cranko's highly romantic Lady and the Fool true love triumphs; and in MacMillan's wistful Solitaire a young girl remains an outsider despite her attempts to be accepted.
Hobson's Choice - From the modest surrounds of a Salford shoe shop springs a gleeful romantic comedy. Will Mossop is a humble shoemaker, whose talent could take him far. Headstrong Maggie Hobson is learning to play by the rules - and win - in a man's world. Henry, Maggies father, is completely flummoxed by a younger generation every bit as stubborn as himself!

Verdi's Nabucco - With amazing lighting and stage effects which, include horse driven chariots with the Horsemen of the Apocalypse stunt riders. Nabucco returns after a sell out visit to the Royal Albert Hall in 2002. (Sung in Italian with English surtitles)
Carmen - Friday 4 & Saturday 5 November 7.30pm
Bizet's Carmen - With a majestic White Andulucian Stallion, and the famous International Romale Gypsy Dance Troupe. (Sung in French with English surtitles)

In December the Empire hosts the first stop on the national tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, running from 9th December to 4th March.

A new play based on the 1930 Yemeni Riots in South Shields.

Aladdin
Written and directed by Ray Spencer, who also stars alongside Bob Stott, celebrating their 30-year panto partnership.
