"Thoughtful Theatre" at Northern Stage Newcastle's Northern Stage had announced its autumn season of "thoughtful" theatre exploring the theme of "humanity". First up in Stage 1 will be Oh, The Humanity and Other Good Intentions (9-24 Sept), directed by Erica Whyman and designed by Andrew Stephenson, five short funny and touching plays by New York playwright Will Eno which offer five different glimpses of the absurdity of being alive. Set on the American East Coast this collection of vignettes examines how people see themselves in a constantly recorded world, how gloriously inappropriate our innermost thoughts and feelings can appear, and how funny, tragic, and strangely life-affirming the truth can be when we let it slip out. We meet a football coach whose life is in freefall, an airline representative required to pointlessly reassure relatives after a disaster, two hopelessly honest people looking for love online and a photographer who has come to take a picture of us, the audience. Ordinarily extraordinary situations which will make us laugh, cry, and perhaps see our own hopes and fears on the stage. Follwing this will be Roger McGough's adaptation of Molière's Tartuffe (27 Sept-1 Oct) and the Kneehigh returns with their new production The Wild Bride (4-8 Oct). From 21-22 October the Dance Touring Partnership will present Happy as Larry by Shaun Parker & Company. The last production of the season in Stage 1 will be The Glass Slipper, adapted by Stephen Sharkey, directed by Erica Whyman and designed by Angela Simpson, which runs from 28 November to 7th January. When Ella's beloved mother died and her father remarried, little did she know what adventures awaited her. Her new stepmother and her exceedlingly badly-behaved sisters make it their life's work to bully and abuse her, especially in preparation for the famous Northumberland Ball - the hugest, most extravagant party the North East has ever seen. Ella would love to go, of course, and meet the prince, who she happens to know is obsessed with hot air balloons, but she has to stay in the cold, miserable kitchen all alone. Besides, she has nothing whatever to wear... might there be a magical ghost out there to help her? In Stage 2 visiting productions will be:
Northern Stage's Christmas show for the under 6s this year (in Stage 2) will be Shhh A Christmas Story (19 Nov-14 Jan), written by Susan Mulholland and directed by Mark Calvert. Its Christmas Eve and a very excited Boo has to go with her dad to work. He works in a grand old library, where only grown-ups can touch the books and its very important to be quiet. Boo soon finds that this library is anything but quiet and the reason youre told Dont Touch is because its very easy to fall into a book and get very lost. The audiences joins Boo on her adventure into a maze of books, up ladders and into the book shelves, meeting cheeky and sneaky characters along the way. "In spite of tough times, the last twelve months have been a story of success for Northern Stage in which we have made some exceptional theatre and attracted lots of new people through our doors. I'm thrilled to announce our new season which just gets better and better," said Erica Whyman, Artistic Director and Chief Executive. "The autumn season reflects our commitment to the very best in contemporary theatre and dance and features some of my very favourite and most inventive national companies (Quarantine, Kneehigh, ETT and Liverpool Theatres) as well as some really exciting productions of our own. I am particularly delighted to be working once again with my old friend Will Eno, whose work, which I very much admire, depicts a complex world with great wit and perception "The word collaboration is essential in the arts at the moment and central to our programming ethic. This is reflected in our work with Théâtre Sans Frontières and balletLORENT - aiming to reach new audiences and develop new work"
