Manifesto for a New City publicity image

Northern Stage to Tour New Musical

Newcastle's Northern Stage, currently without a home while its theatre, the Newcastle Playhouse, undergoes major rebuilding, is to tour a new musical by NE writer Julia Darling, winner of the 2003 Northern Rock Foundation Writer's Award and a Booker Prize nominee.

She created a manifesto for a new city following a trip to Barcelona in 2004. Working with the Northern Stage ensemble, she has now expanded her ideas into a witty and uplifting new musical featuring the songs of a napping clerk, a bilingual bus driver and some really annoyed property developers.

Somewhere in contemporary Britain a friendly revolution snatches power from the city's leaders and delivers it to its bread-kneaders and stonemasons, its sculptors and chocolate fanciers, its egg painters and flower arrangers, its blacksmiths and conjurors. All luxury flats are confiscated and all property developers called to the great hall for retraining in creative play. All supermarkets are barricaded and all chain stores closed. There are no brown signs, no information stands, no mobile phone centres, and no mobile phones. And each citizen embarks on the learning of a disappearing language....
