NTS: Autumn and Winter 2009
The National Theatre of Scotland has announced its touring programme
from September to November, 2009.
There will be three tours: The House of Bernarda Alba which
will play in theatres; Long Gone Lonesome, a musical event which
will visit village halls throughout the Highlands and Islands, and Architecting,
which will tour to to Glasgow, London and Lisbon.
The House of Bernarda Alba
By Federico García Lorca, in a contemporary new version by
Rona Munro
Directed by John Tiffany
Set in contemporary Scotland, it features Siobhan Redmond in the title
role.
Following the gangland execution of her husband, the formidable matriarch
Bernarda Alba will do anything to safeguard her family's fortune and
the future of her five daughters. A deal is struck - a marriage of
convenience between her eldest girl and the son of a business rival.
All Bernarda has to do is ensure that the wedding happens, and quickly.
Five headstrong daughters cooped up in the family home in an emotionally
charged atmosphere of rivalry and repressed sexuality make that an
epic challenge.
The cast includes Siobhan Redmond, Louise Ludgate, Jo Freer, Julie
Wilson Nimmo and Carmen Pieraccini.
Touring to the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, (15 September to 3 October),
Dundee Rep Theatre (5 to 10 October), the Alhambra Theatre, Dunfermline
(15 to 17 October) and the King's Theatre, Edinburgh (3 to 7 November).
Long Gone Lonesome
Created by Duncan McLean and The Lone Star Swing Band and directed
by Vicky Featherstone
A musical séance, to conjure up through songs and story-telling,
the extraordinary life and times of the legendary Shetland musician
Thomas Fraser. (6 October to 24 October 2009)
Thomas Fraser of Burra Isle, Shetland, a fisherman and crofter, died
in 1978 aged 50. During his life he recorded thousands of bluegrass
songs at home using a reel-to-reel recorder. His tapes were only discovered
25 years later by his grandson who compiled and released them as the
album Long Gone Lonesome Blues in 2002. The critics called
it "one of the most remarkable stories in recording history"
and "some of the greatest American music you will hear".
Three further compilations have subsequently been released; You
and My Old Guitar (2003), Treasure Untold (2005) and That
Far Away Land (2008). Thomas Fraser is now acknowledged as a country
music legend. The Thomas Fraser Memorial Festival is held in Burra
Isle each November, and in December 2008, Thomas's life was the subject
of a major BBC TV documentary Shetland Lone Star. A fifth and
final posthumous CD is due for release in 2010.
Touring to village halls in the Highlands and Islands from 6 to 24
October. The production will visit Orkney, Dornoch, Lochinver, Thurso,
Dingwall and Aberdeen. Venues and dates to be announced.
