Alan Cumming
NTS Bacchae for London

The National Theatre of Scotland's production of Euripides' The Bacchae, which will premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival this year, is to transfer to the Lyric, Hammersmith, after performances at the King's, Edinburgh (11th to 18th August), and the Theatre Royal, Glasgow (28th August to 1st September). It will play at the West London venue from 5th to 22nd September.

The production, which will be directed by John Tiffany (who directed last year's Fringe hit Black Watch), is a new version of Euripdes' play by David Greig from a literal translation by Ian Ruffell and will star Alan Cumming. It marks the return of Alan Cumming to the Scottish stage for the first time in seventeen years.

The magnetic young Dionysus returns home with his cult of female followers to exact his revenge, unleashing the full force of female sexuality on the city. Savage, comic and intensely lyrical, The Bacchae dramatises the conflict between the emotional and rational sides of the human psyche.
