NTS - One Company, Three Festivals
The National Theatre of Scotland will be taking part in three of Edinburgh's
festivals this year, the Fringe, the International Festival and the
Book Festival.
The Fringe
Black Watch
By Gregory Burke
An unauthorized biography of the legendary Scottish regiment.
Venue No: 109 University of Edinburgh Drill Hall, Forrest Hill (off
Forrest Road), EH1 2QL
Part of the Traverse Theatre programme
Tuesday 1st August - Sunday 27th August (Tuesdays - Sundays) at 8.30pm
The National Theatre of Scotland presents a theatrical investigation
based on interviews conducted by Gregory Burke with former soldiers
of the Black Watch who served in Iraq. Performed in a disused drill
hall, Black Watch will be a highly physical piece of political
theatre.
Valued for the clan ties and bravery at its heart, the Black Watch
has been in the vanguard of countless British military expeditions
from Waterloo and the Somme to Kosovo. Its last great challenge before
amalgamation was relieving American forces at Camp Dogwood in Iraq.
"It's a buzz, you're in a war ay, and you're doing the job
you're trained for, but it's no like they're a massive threat tay
you or tay your country, your no defending your country, we're
invading their country and fucking their day up."
Black Watch is a politically charged large scale theatre project
with a cast of ten, which utilizes to blistering effect Gregory's
Burke potent ability to offer insight into the psyche of young men
caught up in violent times.
This is Gregory Burke's third collaboration with John Tiffany, Associate
Director (New Work) at NTS.

Realism
Written and directed by Anthony Neilson
A co-production between the NTS and the EIF
Royal Lyceum Theatre
Monday 14th August 2006 - Saurdayt 19th August 2006
The world premiere of a new play by award winning director and playwright
Anthony Neilson, marking the first collaboration between the National
Theatre of Scotland and the Edinburgh International Festival.
Anthony Neilson's previous Festival commission The Wonderful World
of Dissocia was a huge critical and commercial success; at once
hilarious and deeply serious, it affirmed Neilson's status as one
of the major voices in contemporary theatre. He also directed The
Death of Klinghoffer for the EIF in 2005 and earlier this year,
Home Edinburgh, one of ten theatre projects that launched the
NTS in February 2006.
Anthony Neilson uses a high risk, exhilarating process. He writes
his plays within a tight time frame, developing the script in his
role as writer and director with an ensemble of actors in rehearsal.
Realism will reunite Anthony with The Wonderful World of
Dissocia's creative team: Miriam Buether, set designer, Chahine
Yavroyan, lighting designer and composer Nick Powell. Chahine most
recently lit Elizabeth Gordon Quinn for the NTS and Nick Powell
composed the music for the NTS/Improbable production of The Wolves
in the Walls.
Lunctime Talk to the EIF
NTS Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone will be taking part in a
lunchtime talk at the EIF on Thursday 17th August: 1.20 pm in the
Royal Museum Lecture Theatre.

Your National Theatre
Sunday 13th August
It has been a momentous year in Scottish culture, not least because
of the historic establishment of a National Theatre - not a thing
of heavy bricks and mortar but innovative, flexible and adventurous.
How has it gone and where is it going - and why? The special panel
of guests includes Vicky Featherstone, Artistic Director of the National
Theatre of Scotland, John Byrne, celebrated writer of The Slab
Boys Trilogy and Tutti Frutti and Lyn Gardner, theatre
critic for The Guardian.
The discussion is at the Highland Park Spiegeltent on Sunday 13th
August from 7.30pm to 8.45pm.
