NTW Announces Autumn/Winter Season

After the bsuccess of its first six shows (five of which totally sold out), National Theatre Wales has announced its productions for October, November and December.

From 7th to 16th October, the company, in a co-production with Sherman Cymru, will present Love Steals Us From Loneliness by Gary Owen, directed by NTW artitistic director John E McGrath, at Hobo’s Rock Club & Live Music Venue, Bridgend.

The play, set in Bridgend where Owen spent his teens, looks beyond the headlines to examine the real issues that surround adolescence – impulsiveness, uncertainty, extremes of emotion, loss and how we deal with it, longing, boredom, guilt, exuberance, and denial. The play follows a group of Bridgend teenagers as they drink together, explore their sexual identity, and contemplate their future. And when, one night, everything changes, we see how the events of adolescence irreversibly shape our adult lives.

In November, NTW and Told by an Idiot celebrate Gwyn Thomas, the great Welsh storyteller and dark, hilarious chronicler of the Valleys – one of the most distinctive Welsh voices of the last century.

Taking as its inspiration Thomas’ ink-black comic tales, The Dark Philosophers is a funny, violent and passionate depiction of a community teetering on the brink of humanity. Using Told by an Idiot’s trademark anarchic physicality and inventive storytelling, this adaptation brings out the bleak, wild humour in tales laced with sex, murder and Thomas’ devastating Valleys wit.

Co-founder and co-artistic director of Told by an Idiot Paul Hunter will direct the production which will play at The Riverfront, Newport, from 11th to 13th November and at Y Stiwt Theatre, Rhosllannerchrugog, Wrexham, from 18th to 20th.

The company teams up with Fevered Sleep from 7th to 21st December to produce The Weather Factory in a house in Penygroes, Gwynedd.

The production transforms an ordinary house into a place of magic, using local people’s stories about the weather, the conversations we all have about it, and the science behind the seasons to celebrate the natural geography that makes Snowdonia the engine room of the Welsh climate. It is directed and designed by David Harradine, Fevered Sleep's artistic director.

Tickets are available from Galeri Caernarfon in Victoria Dock, Caernarfon, and the production is suitable for age 9+. It takes place in a three-storey domestic house. For audience members who use wheelchairs and are unable to access the basement and upstairs rooms, a video of the events in those rooms will be provided.
