NToS Development Plans Announced The National Theatre of Scotland today unveiled its strategy for development, encompassing its touring schedule, plans to stage Scottish works and international tours. The details of the programme will be announced in October.
The NToS is committed to work with each region of Scotland once per year, whether in terms of youth work, touring productions, site-specific shows, co-productions, or community theatre.
In addition, the ambitious plans include the creation of NToS Workshop, a hothouse for the development of ideas and talent, a NToS Youth Company, and an ensemble touring company which will take up residency in rural areas for a few weeks at a time and will create three small scale productions per year.
The final appointments to the senior management team at the National Theatre were also announced today. Adrian Searle joins as Communications Director and Derek Kennedy has been appointed as Finance and Administration Manager. Adrian Searle was previously Founding Director of Freight Design, a Glasgow-based marketing communications consultancy where he spent five years managing marketing strategies for major blue-chip clients. Prior to this, he was Marketing Controller of Bowie-Castlebank Limited. He has also acted as a consultant to Scottish Youth Theatre, the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh and the Scottish Arts Council.
Derek Kennedy joins NToS from Pitlochry Festival Theatre where he was Head of Finance for five years. He was previously a Management Accountant at the Royal Lyceum Theatre for sixteen years.
Speaking at a meeting of the Federation of Scottish Theatre, Vicky Featherstone, Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Scotland, said, We have been consulting with theatre professionals and groups throughout the country and have had a hugely productive period of developing ideas and strategy. Each piece of work that the National Theatre stages will aim to attract the widest possible audience whether throughout Scotland or internationally, and touring will be the mainstay of our programme.
We want to give people from all over the country the opportunity to see different kinds of theatre, whether that is youth theatre, childrens theatre, site-specific, community or participatory works. We will also celebrate the best Scottish drama and stage new productions of Scottish classics. Collaborations between Scottish and international artists to develop new works will also be crucial.
Eddie Jackson, Chair of the Federation of Scottish Theatre, added, These are very exciting times for the theatre community in Scotland and it is great to be involved in the development of the National Theatre as it takes shape. The FST was one of the most ardent campaigners for a National Theatre of Scotland and today it is great news that such strides have been taken towards the first productions. This is an ambitious strategy for the Theatre and one which will benefit people all over the country.
