NToS Education Director Appointed Simon Sharkey, Director of Cumbernauld Theatre, has been appointed to the National Theatre of Scotland as Associate Director (Education), the NToS announced today. Simon is a highly respected theatre director, who has worked in theatre in Scotland for over twenty years. Simon Sharkey said, Im delighted to be invited to be part of this great adventure which I see as part of a continuum involving years of advocacy, inspirational debate and thought from pioneers and people passionate about theatre in all its shapes and forms. I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with such a talented group of people, some of whom, Ive known for years and worked alongside before like Liz Lochhead and Neil Murray. I firmly believe the National Theatre of Scotland will provide great opportunities for everyone involved in theatre in Scotland, and I relish the chance to be a part of it. Education is central to the needs of the sector to nurture the fresh talent of tomorrow and support the artists and organisations of today in communicating with their audience and facilitating a creative dialogue. Vicky Featherstone, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of the National Theatre of Scotland said, I am delighted that Simon is joining us. He will be a very valuable addition to the team and brings a wealth of expertise in theatre education and community theatre of all kinds. Simons involvement with touring productions nationally and internationally will be a great asset for us. He is one of the very few people who have such a wide ranging experience and who are so well regarded in the theatre community in Scotland. During his tenure at Cumbernauld Theatre Company Trust, Simon oversaw the development of eight Youth Theatres, catering for children as young as five, up to young people of 21 years of age. He also developed Cumbernauld Theatres relationship with the 1 in 100 Theatre Company, a company of adults with special needs, which runs weekly workshops and regularly plays to sell-out audiences. Sharkey also pioneered a model for international collaboration that resulted in productions and exchanges in Singapore, Portugal and Jordan. Born in Glasgow, Simon graduated from the RSAMD in 1983 with a BA in Dramatic Studies. He has worked in Scottish theatre since 1983 and is also an accomplished playwright.
