Les Mis to tour to The Lowry

It was announced this week that the musical Les Misérables will visit The Lowry in Salford in August for just two weeks as part of its current tour.

E-mails were sent out on Wednesday to members of the 'My Lowry' e-mail list for priority bookings for the run from 10 to 21 August. The production opens next week at Manchester's Palace Theatre where – along with its sister theatre the Opera House – most large-scale West End musicals are usually performed when they visit Manchester, and so this high-profile musical production is a major coup for the Salford venue in its tenth anniversary year.

Phil Jupitus Les Dennis

Jupitus & Dennis in Liverpool Hairspray

It has been announced that the Liverpool run of the tour of hit musical Hairspray will star Phill Jupitus in drag as Edna Turnblad and Liverpool comic Les Dennis as his husband Wilbur.

Original West End Edna Michael Ball reprises his performance for many stops on the tour including Manchester's Opera House but his other commitments prevent him from playing it for the whole tour. Essex comedian Jupitus finishes his stint in Edna's ample frocks in the West End production later this month, and his recent messages on Twitter suggest he will miss playing the role. Dennis recently got rave reviews for his performance as the dame in the Empire's pantomime production of Peter Pan.

The production runs at the Empire from 17 August to 4 September.

Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre is asking for volunteers to fill non-speaking extra roles in its upcoming production of George Orwell's 1984 directed by Matthew Dunster.

The producers are looking for white males between the ages of 18 and 50 years for the production, which runs from 24 February to 27 March; they do not require availability for the whole of the run from any of the participants or any acting experience. There will be a performance workshop on Tuesday 26 January at 6pm for anyone interested in taking part.

If you wish to attend the workshop, contact casting.director@royalexchange.co.uk.
