Tmesis presents sixth Physical FestLiverpool-based theatre company Tmesis presents its sixth annual festival of physical theatre, Physical Fest, at various locations in Liverpool city centre next week. Events include a three-day workshop with Chris Fittock, writer of Tmesis's show The Dreadful Hours, a workshop on improvisation and spontaneity with Javier Marzan of Peepolykus, a beginners' aerial workshop from circus group Black & Blue, Al Seed's two day workshop on his 'creaturing' technique for non-human movement and Airborne Entertainment's one-day workshop in 'free running'. On the last day of the festival, Fest Live at the Black-E will give an open platform to both new and established artists to try out ideas as well as presenting extracts from existing works from Airborne Entertainment, Mary Pearson, XY, Just Add Water, Taciturn and Pei Tong. Not Part Of NYE filmEmma Short has made a short film about this year's Not Part Of New Year's Eve mini-festival, which can be viewed for free on YouTube. The festival's organisers say they are 'delighted' with the results of the project, for which Short and her cameraman Greg Higgins had total creative control. The film gives a backstage insight into the festival, including interviews and footage of some of the performers who took part. It can be seen at www.youtube.com/watch?v=ln13_rPws08 The main Not Part Of festival, originally conceived to run alongside the Manchester International Festival, will not take place in summer this year but plans are already being made for a much bigger event for 2011 which will launch in September.
National Theatre casting in SalfordThe National Theatre is looking for young actors for Alan Bennett's play The Habit of Art for when it visits The Lowry in Salford in October. The company is looking for two boys aged 11 to 13 with unbroken voices to share the part of Charlie, a young boy who auditions for composer Benjamin Britten, a part which will require solo singing and also includes a few spoken lines. Theatre Royal competition anthology publishedTheatre Royal Onward, the group set up to raise money to buy and renovate Hyde's Theatre Royal and restore it to use as a theatre, has published the leading entries in its recent poetry and short story competition as an anthology as a further fundraiser. The published pieces include first prize winner Roger Elkin's poem Vultures, second place Rachel Crowther's story Last of the Ptolemies and third place Don Nixon's poem On The Silk Road plus three highly commended pieces and another twelve pieces out of a total of 99 entries into the competition. 1,250 families invited to Lowry 10th birthday partyThe Lowry in Salford has given free tickets to 1,250 families for a free day out at the venue including a show and other activities as part of its Big Family 10th Birthday Party from 4 to 6 June. Visual arts education manager Dave Smith explained, "The Lowry wants to say thank you to those Salford residents whove given their time and energy to creative community projects over the past few years. With the help of Arts Council England Sustain fund we can treat them to a great family experience, free of charge, with transport to The Lowry, tickets and lunch all included." Shows that will be performed during the weekend include The Mermaid Princess from Italy's Teatro Kismet based on Hans Andersen's The Little Mermaid, Australian clown Wolfe Bowart in La La Luna, the film of Peter and the Wolf with live music from Manchester Camerata Orchestra, star of TV's Boogie Beebies Boogie Pete, Slung Low's interactive journey Small Worlds and Mike Kenny's A Scarecrow's Tale. There will also be other activities involving Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert, National Youth Theatre, Company Chameleon and Royal Opera House.
NW productionsAt Studio Salford, Unearthed Theatre presents When I Grow Up I Want To Be A Man by Ellie Rose, following Lola on a journey to find her place in the world, a place she can finally be comfortable in, from 2 to 5 June. Ladders Theatre Company celebrates its first birthday with new comedy The White Picket Fence by the company's artistic director Dawn Kennedy at Forum Studio Theatre in Chester from 1 to 3 June. All Clare ever wanted was to settle down, marry her childhood sweetheart and live in a house with a white picket fence. However with a best friend on the brink of divorce, a mother attempting online dating, an emotionally unavailable lesbian for a sister and a husband with some pretty complex issues of his own, Clare is about to realize that life is never that simple. Small Worlds from Slung Low is an interactive journey through a series of rooms combining live performance, music and digital projection at The Lowry in Salford from 2 to 6 June. Also at The Lowry, Teatro Kismet presents The Mermaid Princess by Teresa Ludovico, inspired by Hans Andersen's The Little Mermaid, from 2 to 6 June and La La Luna combines circus theatre with film for one performance on 5 June. At the Royal Exchange Studio in Manchester, Powder Monkey by head of education Amanda Dalton for ages 9 years and over follows 12-year old Stella who spends a lot of time hiding out in her wasteland kingdom on the edge of the woods defending her armchair castle while her brother is away fighting in the army. It runs from 3 to 19 June. At Rose Theatre in Ormskirk, musical comedy Girls Night from Goodnights Entertainment runs on 2 and 3 June and Handheld Theatre presents Time For Tea for ages 3 and over on 5 June which can also be seen at The Met in Bury on 1 June. Also at The Met, Brute Farce presents its adaptation of Jules Vernes's Around the World in Eighty Days with a cast of five each playing multiple roles on 2 June and Circo Ridiculoso explores the strange and bizarre universe of a wild balloon tamer in Lighter Than Air on 4 June. Paul Merton's Impro Chums, featuring Mike McShane, Lee Simpson, Richard Vranch and Suki Webster, will bring its improvised comedy sketches to The Lowry in Salford on 31 May. Girls Night Out by Dave Simpson explores the world of the hen and stag night parties at Liverpool Empire from 31 May to 3 June. Stephen Mallatratt's long-running adaptation of Susan Hill's ghost story The Woman in Black visits Liverpool Playhouse from 31 May to 5 June. Library Theatre Company's final production at its current venue is Oscar Wilde's classic The Importance of Being Earnest directed by artistic director Chris Honer, running from 5 June to 3 July.
