NYT Heads for the Record Books

As part of the National Youth Theatre’s 50th year anniversary, the World’s first ever youth theatre is attempting to be in the Guinness Book of Records with the mother of all play readings! It’s Playathon will consist of every play ever performed in the company’s fifty year history being read consecutively, non-stop, day and night for approximately 240 hours! That’s 150 plays, 2,592,000 words, and no dramatic pauses allowed!

Launching the event will be the original founder members (including Simon Ward and Ken Farrington) reading the company’s first ever production, Henry V. Many alumni and supporters will be taking part over the ten days to help raise £50,000 or more for the company.

Charities often organise sponsored events to raise their profile and raise funds for their cause, such as sponsored walks and marathons. It therefore seems fitting for the National Youth Theatre to hold a theatrical equivalent never achieved before on such an ambitious scale.

Starting at 2.00pm on Friday 26th May, this mammoth task will take place at the company’s headquarters at 443-445 Holloway Road in North London N7 6LW.

As an opportunity for all members, their friends and family, former members and supporters of the company to re-engage with National Youth Theatre and meet their younger counterparts, all members are invited to take part and get themselves sponsored to read continuously in 4 hour periods until the canon of plays has been completed. This is expected to finish on Sunday 4th June.

Former members are asked to register to take part by going to teh website at www.nyt.org.uk
