At last night's National Television Awards Doctor Who won the award for most popular drama and the show's two stars, Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper, won most popular actor and actress respectively.

The most popular newcomer was Anthony Cotton of Coronation Street which lost out to EastEnders in the most popular serial drama category.

The National Television Awards are voted for by the public.
