Harold Pinter

PEN Announces Pinter Prize

Harold Pinter is to be honoured by English PEN which has announced a major new literary prize in his memory.

The PEN/Pinter Prize will be awarded annually to a British writer or a writer resident in Britain of outstanding literary merit who shows the qualities Pinter described in his Nobel speech: "I believe that despite the enormous odds which exist, unflinching, unswerving, fierce intellectual determination, as citizens, to define the real truth of our lives and our societies is a crucial obligation which devolves upon us all. It is in fact mandatory. If such a determination is not embodied in our political vision we have no hope of restoring what is so nearly lost to us — the dignity of man."

The first award, which is worth £1,000 and a further £1,000 to be given to an imprisoned writer of conscience of the winner's choice, will be awarded on 14th October at a ceremony at the British Library. The judges will be:

  • Lisa Appignanesi, the President of English PEN
  • Antonia Fraser, Pinter's widow and former President of English PEN
  • playwright Tom Stoppard
  • broadcaster Mark Lawson
  • Nicholas Hytner, artistic director of the National Theatre

There will be no published shortlist and the winner will make an acceptance speech inspired by Pinter's life and work, which will be printed and bound by Faber and Faber snd presented as part of the prize.

Pinter was a former vice-president of English PEN.
