Regional Cultural Consortia to Go According to a report in The Stage, the government is to phase out the eight Regional Cultural Consortis which were established in )ctober 2004 as non-Departmental public bodies, sponsored by Department for Culture, Media and Sport centrally. The eight bodies are:
There is also a similar body for London, the Cultural Strategy Group for London appointed by the Mayor, which has a similar role to a Consortium. The RCCs bring together representatives from regional agencies working in the arts, heritage, museums, tourism, libraries, sport and archives, and from local government, as well as groups and individuals from the creative industries. They are charged with drawing up a strategy that sets out the future for culture within their region. Now arts minister Margaret Hodge has announced that they will be shit down over the next twelve months and their responsibilituies transferred to appropriate bodies such as Arts Council England. The closure should result in considerable administrative savings which, Hodge says, will be invested by the DCMS in provision for culture and sport. "We have come a long way in strengthening the case for the role of culture and sport at the heart of a region, its economy and its aspirations," she said.." That is thanks in no small part to the work of our cultural consortia and their boards over the last nine years."
