Benedict Cumberbatch

International Season at the Royal Court

This autumn sees a season of international plays in both theatres at the Royal Court. In the Theatre Downstairs Ionesco's Rhinoceros, directed by Dominic Cooke, will open on 29th September (previews from 21st) and on 6th November (previews from 1st) it will be joined in repertory by Max Frisch's The Arsonists, which will be directed by Ramin Gray.

Both plays will star Benedict Cumberbatch. No other casting has yet been announced.

In the Theatre Upstairs there will be a season of plays by contemporary international playwrights:

  • The Ugly One by Marius von Mayenburg (Germany) from 13th September to 13th October
  • Kebab by Gianina Carbunariu (Romania) from 19th October to 3rd November
  • Free Outgoing by Anupama Chandrasekhar (India) from 8th to 24th November
  • a double bill of The Good Family by Joakim Pirinen (Sweden) and The Khomenko Family Chronicle by Natalia Vorozhbit (Ukraine) from 30th November to 21st December

"The Royal Court has always been an international theatre," Dominic Cookle said, "and I intend to celebrate that with the very best drama, new and old, from around the world. Here at the Royal Court, we believe in developing playwriting talent from the grass roots. Each of the writers in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs this season has had an ongoing relationship with the Royal Court’s International Department. These complement our shows in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs, which plug back into the early internationalist days of the Court, and a spirit of European iconoclasm."
