Royal Exchange New Season Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre main house season for autumn and winter, just announced, takes us from the Renaissance up to the early 1990s with works by Christopher Marlowe, Kaufman and Hart, C P Taylor, Jim Cartwright and Jonathan Harvey. The season opener brings back the team from last year's Doctor Faustus including director Toby Frow and playwright Christopher Marlowe with Edward II, running from 7 September to 8 October. This play was last seen at this theatre in an acclaimed production directed by Nicholas Hytner in 1986 with Ian McDiarmid in the title role opposite Michael Grandage as Piers de Gaveston. We then jump to 1930s Germany with C P Taylor's classic tale of moral dilemmas in a Nazi state Good, directed by Polly Findlay, from 12 October to 5 November, and then Sarah Frankcom revives Jonathan Harvey's first major theatrical hit Beautiful Thing from 1993 from 9 November to 3 December. Back to the 1930s for Christmas with classic Broadway comedy from Marx Brothers writer George S Kaufman and his frequent writing partner Moss Hart, You Can't Take It With You, directed by physical comedy specialist Paul Hunter of theatre company Told By An Idiot and running from 7 December to 14 January. After his acclaimed performance of the title role in Zack last Christmas, local comedian Justin Moorhouse takes on multiple roles in Jim Cartwright's Two directed by Greg Hersov from 18 January to 25 February 2012. Public booking opens on 13 June, but season tickets are available now. David Chadderton
