Dateline: 18th September, 2006 Audience Joins Exchange to Toast Anniversary The whole audience raised a glass to celebrate the Royal Exchange Theatre's 30th anniversary at the end of the press performance of Mary Barton on Monday night, 11 September. Artistic directors Braham Murray and Greg Hersov followed a giant cake in the shape of the number '30' into the auditorium after the show and made short speeches about this milestone. Murray paid tribute to past and present members of the theatre's staff, referring to Richard Negri, the former artistic director who conceived the unique building that the theatre occupies, as a 'genius'. The Royal Exchange Theatre was born when the former 69 Theatre Company took over the old cotton exchange building in St Ann's Square, Manchester in 1976. Negri's idea was not to simply convert the vast exchange floor into a traditional theatre but to build a glass module in the middle of the floor to house a theatre-in-the-round, which created a space with great intimacy that is unlike any other theatre space in the world. Murray is the only surviving original member of the original team of artistic directors, which also included James Maxwell, Caspar Wrede and Michael Elliott. Hersov joined the team in 1979. After their short speeches, Murray and Hersov invited the whole audience to join them for complimentary champagne and birthday cake.
