Spring at the National

The National Theatre has announced its season from January to March 2012:

Opening 18th January (previews from 11th), continuing in repertoire
Travelling Light
By Nicholas Wright
Directed by Nicholas Hytner
Lyttelton Theatre, on tour & NT Live

Antony Sher stars as Jacob with Mark Extance, Colin Haigh, Paul Jesson, Sue Kelvin, Abigail McKern, Damien Molony (as Motl), Lauren O'Neil (as Anna), Karl Theobald and Alexis Zegerman.
In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father's cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their villeage, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl - now a famed American film director - looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams.

Opening 31 January (previews from 24th), continuing in repertoire
She Stoops to Conquer
By Oliver Goldsmith

Moon on a Rainbow Shawl
By Errol John
Cottesloe Theatre
Directed by Michael Buffong, with designs by Soutra Gilmour
For the teeming populace of Old Mack's cacophonous yard in Port of Spain, Trinidad, it's a cheek by jowl existence lived out on a sweltering public stage. Snatches of calypso compete with hymn tunes, drums and street cries as neighbours drink, brawl, pass judgment, make love, look out for each other and crave a better life. But Ephraim is no dreamer and nothing, not even the seductive Rosa, is going to stop him escaping his dead-end job for a fresh start in England.

Opening 12th March (previews on 9th & 10th), playing until 28th
Can We Talk About This?
Conceived and directed by Lloyd Newson
Co-production with DV8
Lyttelton Theatre
A co-production with DV8 Physical Theatre
Suitable for ages 16+
From the 1989 book burnings of Salman Rusdie's The Satanic Verses, to the murder of filmmaker Theo Van Gogh and the controversy of the 'Muhammad cartoons' in 2005, DV8's new production examines how these events have reflected and influenced multicultural policies, freedom of speech and censorship.
Can We Talk About This? is based on real voices and interviews with leading figures from across the religious, political, cultural and social spectrum, including MPs, high profile authors and journalists.
