National Makes £93,000 Surplus

The National Theatre's unrestricted surplus for the financial year 2007-8 was £93,000, its Annual Report reveals. Income for the year was £48,975,000 and expenditure £47,539,00, made up as follows:

Production costs were made up as follows:

Performance running : 27%
Production build : 24%
Actors and Musicians : 21%
Touring : 9%
Directors, Designers and Writers : 7%
The History Boys* in the West End : 7%
Planning and Direction : 5%

There were 26 productions during the year, eight in the Olivier and nine each in the Lyttelton and Cottesloe. Nineteen were new productions: six each in the Olivier and Cottesloe and seven in the Lyttelton.

* In total over a period of four years, including two runs in the Lyttelton, The History Boys contributed £5m to the NT's budget.
