An eclectic programme of events celebrating all aspects of the arts, offering the chance to learn about the National's work and discover more about theatre.

6th October - Martin Jarvis - Cottesloe
Martin Jarvis talks about Broadway Jeeves?, his account of triumphs and chaos as he played the butler on Broadway in the wake of 9/11. Followed by booksigning.

9th October - Richard Eyre - Cottesloe
Richard Eyre discusses National Service: A Diary of a Decade, charting his time as Director of the National and revealing life at the heart of British cultural and political affairs. Followed by booksigning.

17th October - Adapting for the Stage - 2.30pm (2hrs) Olivier
His Girl Friday is an unusual theatrical hybrid: a stage adaptation of a film of a play. Learn more about turning other media into theatre.

22nd October - Richard Jones on Tales from the Vienna Woods - Olivier
The director talks about his new production.

3rd November - Playreading: A Sexual Congress by Ödön von Horváth - 2pm (2hrs) Olivier
Set in the inter-war period of raging inflation in Germany, Horváth portrays the losers in 'the gigantic battle between the individual and society', predicting the cycle of violence that was to spread throughout Europe. Translated by Penny Black.

6th November - Translating for Theatre - 2.30pm (2hrs) Olivier
Discover how translators, literal-translators and adapters interpret a variety of foreign texts, from Horváth to Chekhov.

7th November - Jumpers Revisited 6pm - Lyttelton
Members of the company and production team talk about Tom Stoppard's celebrated and multifarious play. After working on it for six months, do they totally understand it?

18th & 19th November - Defying Hitler by Sebastian Heffner - 5.30pm (1hr) - Cottesloe
Rupert Wickham performs his own adaptation of Heffner's memoir of growing up in pre-war Berlin, exploring how and why the Germans were seduced by Hitler and the Nazis.

21st November - The Travelex £10 Season- Olivier
Various directors, designers, actors and writers look back at the Season and discuss what has been achieved in artistic and strategic terms over the past six months.

19th December - Theatre Quiz - Cottesloe
Two teams battle it out as Emma Freud hosts another edition of the festive annual quiz of theatrical knowledge, artistic endeavour and creative invention.

5th January - Matthew Bourne on Play Without Words - Lyttelton
The director and choreographer talks about his Olivier Award-winning production.

Staging His Dark Materials
Learn more about the adaptation of Pullman's celebrated work as His Dark Materials comes to life on stage.
6th January - Nicholas Hytner - Olivier

Festival of Lights - December 2003 to February 2004
At the darkest time of the year, the National presents an exploration and celebration of worldwide light festivals. Inspired by light, fire, sun and moon festivals from around the world, British-based artists take a contemporary look at tradition incorporating music, live performance, visual arts and club culture.

FREE EXHIBITIONS

Stage by Stage, a permanent exhibition on the National's history in the Olivier Circle Foyer, plus a changing programme throughout the year.

29th Sep - 27th Oct Speed
The essence and spirit of speed in photographs that celebrate the history of one of the world's most exhilarating sports - motor-racing - in all its powerful forms. Presented in association with the Getty Images Gallery.

22nd Sep - 8th Nov - Images of Beckett: Photographs by John Haynes
A unique collection of images of Samuel Beckett's work in preparation and performance, as well as hitherto unseen portraits of the playwright himself. John Haynes' career in theatre photography spans over 30 years and he has been production photographer for over 90 National Theatre plays.

8th Nov - 6th Dec - The Linbury Biennial Prize for Stage Design Exhibition 2003
The work of 12 of the best young emerging theatre designers. Each exhibit is designed to a brief from one of four Linbury commissioning companies: Actors Touring Company, Royal Theatre Northampton, The Opera Group and West Yorkshire Playhouse. As part of the prize, four designers will be awarded a professional commission with these companies in 2004.

17th Nov - 17th Jan 2004 - Dazzle
Europe's leading exhibition of jewellery and applied art, now in its 23rd year. Exhibits include wearable metal sporrans and masks, plus dramatic pieces by Anoush Waddington and Geoff Roberts. All the work is for sale.

15th Dec - 24th Jan 2004 - The Royal Ballet: Photographs by Johan Persson
Persson is a Principal Dancer of The Royal Ballet and an accomplished photographer. His stunning images present a rare and exclusive behind the scenes view, from rehearsal to performance, of one of the world's great ballet companies.
