NT Suspends Touring

The National Theatre will suspend touring for up to eighteen months from October ths year, artistic director Nicholas Hytner said this week. He told the BBC that the company's touring had not been good value for money. It has been, he said "sporadic" and no review of touring had been carried out for around twenty years. He intends that eventually, the National will tour "more often, more widely and more efficiently."

Part of the reason for the pause is that Hytner feels that there must be thought given to how touring will fit into his plans for the NT as a whole, includng his new rep system.

Co-productions, such as the planned co-production of The Permanent Way (David Hare) with Out of Joint will be exempt from the suspension.

Touring will resume, Hytner intends, with the start of the 16.5% increase in funding from ACE announced a week or so ago.
