Dateline: 15th April, 2007
The 2007 - 2008 opera season at the Royal Opera House sees one world premiere, two new productions, three co-productions being seen for the first time at the Royal Opera House, three first revivals and the entire Ring Cycle. The season begins in September with Gluck's Iphénie en Tauride, with Simon Keenleyside and Susan Graham, directed by Robert Carsen. It is followed from 2nd October to 2nd November by the entire Ring Cycle which will be repeated three times, directed by Keith Warner. Bryn Terfel will sing Wotan and The Wanderer in Siegfried in cycles 1 and 3, being replaced in cycle 2 by John Tomlinson. Placido Domingo sings Siegmund in cycles 1 and 3, and Philip Langridge sings Loge. In November comes Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore, a co-production with L'Opéra Naional de Paris, directed by Laurent Pelly. In December the co-production with Netherlands Opera of Wagner's Parsifal is conducted by Bernard Haitink. Also in December and early January is a revival of the 2000 production of Rossini's La Cenerentola with Magdalena Kozená, followed i Januray and February by a revival of Richard Eyre's production of La Traviata with two different casts. In the Linbury during January and February will be a revival of Olivia Fuch's 2005 production of Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. David McVicar's 2003 production of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte plays during January and February with two different casts, one of which inlcudes Simon Keenleyside. At the end of February and beginning of March there will be a new production of Richard Strauss' Salome, directed by David McVicar, designed by Es Devlin. In March and April Steven Pimlott's 2006 production of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. For just eight performances in March and April there will be a revival, with a new cast, of Francesca Zambella's production of Carmen. April also sees the world premiere of Harrison Birtwistle's The Minotaur, directed by Stephen Langridge with designn by Alison Chitty. The 1881 revised version of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra comes in May, conducted by John Eliot Gardiner and directed by Ian Judge. May also sees the seond revival of Jonathan Kent's production of Tosca. June sees a new production of Verdi's Don Carlo, directed by Nicholas Hytner and conducted by Antonio Pappano, and a fither new production in the Linbury, Thomas Adès' chamber opera, Powder Her Face. In June and July Christof Loy's 2002 production of Ariadne auf Naxos has its second revival, as does David McVicar's 2006 production of Le Nozze du Figaro. A new production to Covent Garden in July is Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, and the season ends with John Copley's production of La Bohème in its 21st revival.
