Regional development agency Advantage West Midlands (AWM) has confirmed a grant of £20m towards the £100m needed to transform the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford. It is, the Agency said, one of the "biggest and most significant investments" it has ever made in the region. AWM's Chief Executive John Edwards said, "The importance of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and Stratford to the region's visitor economy is immense and the securing of the 2012 Olympics has made it even more important that we fully exploit the opportunities." Arts Council England has already approved a grant of £50m towards the project, a sum which the RSC must match from its own fund-raising. The AWM grant will, said RSC executive director Vikki Heywood, give the company "a solid foundation to secure the additional £30 million from individuals, trusts and businesses." See our news story of 22nd September, 2004, for the details of the redevelopment project. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
