RSC King John Casting Following her highly acclaimed production of Philip Massingers political drama Believe What You Will for the RSC in 2005 Josie Rourke directs King John in the Swan Theatre. She is an Associate Director of The Sheffield Theatres.
King John is one of Shakespeares neglected masterpieces an absorbing account of politics in 13th century England in which a disputed crown results in a heart wrenching end to an innocent life. The play is rarely performed even by the RSC. This will be the fifth time that the company has produced the play since Sir Peter Hall formed the company in 1961. The first was in 1970 and the last was in 2001.
Richard McCabe returns to the RSC to play the title role. Richards many RSC roles include Iago in Michael Attenboroughs Othello (1999), Apemantus in Gregory Dorans Timon of Athens (1999) and Marlowe in Bill Alexanders The School of Night (1993). He played the title role in Birmingham Reps Hamlet (which toured to Elsinore), recently played Salieri for the City of London Sinfonias Amadeus and the title role in Silviu Purcaretes production of Scapino for the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2005. His films include The Constant Gardener, Master and Commander, Vanity Fair and Notting Hill, and his TV work includes To the Ends of the Earth, Trial and Retribution IV, and A Prince Amongst Men.
Tamsin Greig, who plays Constance, is probably best known for her TV roles in Green Wing, Black Books and Love Soup, as well as playing Debbie Aldridge in BBC Radio 4s long-running soap The Archers. She is currently making her RSC debut as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing.
Joseph Millson (Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing) plays the pivotal role of The Bastard. He recently took time out of rehearsals to film a scene for Casino Royale, the new Bond film with Daniel Craig. His previous RSC work includes The Dog in the Manger and Pedro the Great Pretender part of the award-winning Spanish Golden Age Season which was seen in Stratford, London, Newcastle and Madrid.
Sorcha Cusack, (the nurse in the RSCs current production of Romeo and Juliet) plays Elinor. Her recent theatre work include Bloody Sunday at The Tricycle Theatre, RSC Associate Director Dominic Cookes production of By The Bog of Cats in the West End, The Vagina Monologues, A View from the Bridge, Peer Gynt and Playboy of the Western World for the National Theatre and Dancing at Lughnasa in the West End. Her numerous television roles include The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Playing the Field, Eureka Street, and four years in Casualty. Her films include Guy Ritchies Snatch.
The cast also includes Jamie Ballard (Melun), Steven Beard (Chatillon), Simon Bubb (Faulconbridge), Sam Cox (Hubert), Christopher Davies (Peter of Pomfret), Nicholas Day (Philip of France), Rupert Evans (Dauphin), David Fielder (Cardinal Pandulph), Curtis Flowers (English Herald), Shane Frater (Executioner), John Heffernan (James Guerney), Geoffrey Lumb (French Herald), Sam OMahony-Adams (Messenger), Adam Rayner (Essex), Patrick Robinson (Salisbury), Leon Tanner (Austria), Jonny Weir (Pembroke), Amy Brown (Isabella of Angouleme), Morven Christie (Blanche) and Eliza Hunt (Lady Faulconbridge).
