The Park Avenue Armory

RSC's Six Weeks in New York - in the New RST

The RSC's current 44-member ensemble is to perform in New York in July and August 2011 in a five play six-week residency, presented by Lincoln Center Festival and Park Avenue Armory, in association with The Ohio State University, who have had an ongoing partnership with the RSC since 2008.

And the venue for the performances will be a full-sized replica of the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre which is due to open later this year. The thrust stage auditorium specially built by the RSC's theatre technicians and constructed in Park Avenue Armory's Wade Thompson Drill Hall.

The ensemble will perform 45 performances of five Shakepeare plays chosen from the 2009 and 2010 repertoire, The residency, which will be the only chance to see these productions in the US, will run from 6th July until 14th August, 2011 - the RSC’s 50th anniversary year. It will be supported by an extensive education programme, developed by the RSC, using Shakespeare to inspire the imagination and creativity of young people.

Michael Boyd said, "Collaboration lies at the heart of everything we do at the Royal Shakespeare Company, which is why I am so pleased that we are able to work with such great partners to bring the culmination of three years' work in the U.K. to New York in 2011 as part of the Lincoln Center Festival. We have returned to our founding principles as an ensemble company, investing for the long term in our theater artists, plunging into the work and drawing in our audiences. Our thrust stage, wrapping the audience around the action, allows people to reach out to our actors and to each other in a space which is both intimate and powerful. I am delighted that we can recreate that intimacy right here in New York City in the extraordinary space of Park Avenue Armory."
