The Complete Works - Spring 2007

The New Year signals the final chapter in the RSC’s year-long Complete Works Festival. Among those highlights to look forward to are a new play in response to Much Ado About Nothing; two contrasting versions of Richard III; Shakespeare’s sonnets set to music; Ian McKellen in King Lear; Janet Suzman and Timothy West in Coriolanus; and The Merchant of Venice from New York’s Theatre For A New Audience.

  • Days of Significance (10th-20th January 2007, The Swan): A brand new play by Roy Williams, set in market town England and the deserts of Iraq. Written in response to Much Ado About Nothing, the play is one of four pieces of new writing commissioned by the RSC as part of the Complete Works Festival.
  • Richard III (11th January – 17th February 2007, The Courtyard): Following on from Michael Boyd’s critically acclaimed Henry VI trilogy, Richard III forms part of Boyd’s two and a half year project to stage all of Shakespeare’s history plays with the same ensemble of actors.
  • Richard III – An Arab Tragedy (8th-17th February 2007, The Swan): Meanwhile, Sulayman Al-Bassam’s pan-Arabic version of Richard III offers a topical take on Shakespeare’s classic history play. With a pan-Arab company of actors and a live Arab musical score the production is set in the modern Middle East.
  • Nothing Like The Sun: The Sonnet Project (24-25 February 2007, The Courtyard): Gavin Bryars’ unique project with Opera North and the RSC involves musicians setting a chosen sonnet to music. Musicians include: Mercury Prize Winner Antony Hegarty from Antony and the Johnsons; former 10,000 Maniacs frontwoman, Natalie Merchant; Liz Fraser from the Cocteau Twins; Irish singer/songwriter Gavin Friday; and violinist Alexander Balanescu. Performed by a chamber orchestra of eight musicians, three guest singers and RSC actors, the sonnets will be presented in speech and song.

Other highlights coming up in Spring 2007 include:

  • Coriolanus: With Janet Suzman as Volumnia and Timothy West as Menenius, this production is directed by Gregory Doran. RST 22nd February - 31st March 2007.
  • The Merchant of Venice: New York's Theatre For A New Audience (TFANA) with F Murray Abraham as Shylock. Swan Theatre 22nd - 31st March 2007.
  • King Lear: directed by Trevor Nunn and with Ian McKellen as Lear. The Courtyard Theatre 24th March - 21st June 2007.
