RSC Beauty Casting

Laurence Boswell’s Royal Shakespeare Company production of Beauty and the Beast returns to Stratford-upon-Avon this Christmas after its successful run last year. Whilst retaining the qualities which made it so popular with children and adults alike in 2003, the 2004 show has been substantially re-imagined – introducing completely new characters, songs and extraordinary physical elements.

The cast includes actors from last year’s production as well as some new faces. Gary Sefton, who last year played the mechanical Beast’s man, returns for the 2004 production as Beast. Gary’s acrobatic and climbing skills will bring the Beast to life in a highly visual way. Beast will climb across and walk down the back wall and use special jumping stilts (‘Powerisers’) – which allow him to take two metre leaps and run at twenty miles per hour.

Karen Paullada makes her RSC debut as Beauty. This young Welsh actress was recently seen on TV in Hearts of Gold. Her theatre credits include Cancer Time at the Latchmere Theatre and a tour of The Blue Room.

Miltos Yerolemou also makes a welcome return to the production. Last year he played the ice-cream loving Emile – and this year reprises that role as well as that of Beast’s Man. He will be jumping around the stage in special bouncing shoes (‘Kangoo Jumps’)!

Jan Pearson, who played the ward sister Kath Shaughnessy in BBC One’s Holby City, is playing Helene and The Witch in Beauty. Her theatre credits include Laurence Boswell’s original Young Vic production of Beauty and the Beast, The Norman Conquests (Theatr Clywd) and Tantamount Esperance (Royal Court).

Michelle Lukes (in the chorus) will be appearing in Oliver Stone’s forthcoming film Alexander the Great (with Colin Farrell). Sirine Saba, an RSC regular, returns to the company as Veronique and Darren Carnall makes his RSC debut in the chorus. Darren Tunstall (who plays Jean Louis) is looking forward to celebrating his son’s first birthday in Stratford. His son was born at Warwick Hospital during the run of the show last year.

The cast also includes: Lee Boggess (chorus), Sergio Covino (chorus), Alistair David (chorus), Darren J Fawthrop (swing), Christian Flint (Phillippe, Daniel Tuite (Andre), Darren Tunstall (Jean Louis), Ewan Wardrop (chorus), Margie Chadwick (chorus), Ebony Molina (chorus), Flik Swan (chorus), Beth Vyse (Marie Claire) and Nancy Wei George (swing).

Joining Laurence Boswell on the creative team are set designer Jeremy Herbert, costume designer Kandis Cooke, and choreographers Stuart Hopps and Heather Habens. Lighting is by Adam Silverman, sound by Mic Pool, music by Mick Sands and movement by Gary Sefton and Darren Tunstall.

The Production runs at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, from Monday 15th November 2004 to Sunday 16rh January 2005.
