RSC Costume Sale The Royal Shakespeare Company will be holding a Costume Sale on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th September at its rehearsal rooms in Stratford-upon-Avon. Around 7000 items, including costumes, shoes, hats and accessories, will be available to purchase.
The garments in the sale, originally constructed by the RSC Costume Department, have been chosen from the RSC’s Hire Wardrobe Department, which hires out RSC costumes after they have finished being used in its productions.
Items for sale cover a range of periods, including early English, Elizabethan and Twentieth Century, as well as one off special items from shows such as Beauty and The Beast, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Merry Wives – The Musical.
Located at the RSC Workshops on the outskirts of the town, the Hire Wardrobe is currently home to over 40,000 costumes. As there has not been a costume sale for over six years, the RSC now needs to free up space, both to create better storage conditions, and to make room for costumes new to Hire Wardrobe.
Alistair McArthur, RSC Head of Costume, and Alison Mitchell, Head of Hire Wardrobe, have had the Herculean task of going through every costume in Hire Wardrobe to select those items that will go into the sale.
Sara Aspley, RSC Head of Enterprise, said, “Looking through the wealth of costumes stored at Hire Wardrobe has taken weeks of work. It’s been a mammoth task, with each of the 40,000 garments held there having to be assessed and reviewed by the RSC team.
“We have items for sale from every area of the wardrobe, including costumes that first made their debut on the stage back in the 1960s. The sale will include costumes worn by many RSC associate artists, often as they were starting their careers, as well as unique one-off pieces such as the Snow Queens’s coat from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. With many items starting at just £2 we hope that people will take the opportunity to come along and purchase a piece of theatre history.”
The sale, which takes place at the RSC’s rehearsal rooms in Arden Street in Stratford-upon-Avon (at the junction with Birmingham Road), will be open to members of the public on Saturday 29th September between 10am-5pm. On Friday 28th September between 11.30am – 5pm the RSC will invite regular hirers and trade customers to make an appointment to allow plenty of time and space to make their selection. Customer parking is available nearby at the Stratford District Council pay and display car park on Arden Street, and there is a facility for customer collection only at the front of the building.
