New RSC Outdoor Theatre

As part of the year long Complete Works festival, the Royal Shakespeare Company is building a 210-seater outdoor theatre, the Dell.

In the RSC Theatre Gardens, overlooking the River Avon and in the shadow of the Holy Trinity Church, the Dell will play host to amateur and student groups looking to take part in the world’s biggest celebration of Shakespeare and his work. With household names like Judi Dench, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen and theatre companies from nearly every continent in the world also taking part in the festival, budding performers can take to the stage by booking a two hour slot at The Dell throughout the summer months by emailing thedell@rsc.org.uk. Seating in The Dell is allocated on a first come first served basis and is free of charge.

Other performances taking part in The Dell include amateur and student theatre groups from as far as north as York and as far south as Devon. As well as new takes on classic plays like Romeo and Juliet and As You Like It, there will be new responses to Shakespeare such as 1623 Theatre’s The Course of True Love, featuring fifteen love scenes from twelve of Shakespeare’s plays; Homeymoon Plus One’s comedy sketch show Nobody Loves Shakespeare; and Lord Gawain Douglas’ one-man show The Wastes of Time, which weaves Shakespeare’s sonnets into imagined scenes from the poet’s life.
