Holly Aird

Indian Boy Casting

Colin Salmon (The World Is Not Enough; Tomorrow Never Dies; Prime Suspect II), Christopher Fulford (Cracker; Immortal Beloved) and Holly Aird (Waking The Dead; Kavannagh QC) are among a nine-strong cast performing Rona Munro’s new play, The Indian Boy as part of the RSC's Complete Works Festival.

Commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company as one of three new plays within the Complete Works Festival, The Indian Boy is a response to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

In Act II, Scene I of Dream, Oberon and Titania are quarrelling because Titania will not give Oberon the Indian changeling boy that is in her care:

Oberon
…I do but beg a little changeling boy
To be my henchman.

Titania
…The fairyland buys not the child of me.
His mother was a vot’ress of my order,
…But she, being mortal, of that boy did die;
And for her sake do I rear up her boy;
And for her sake I will not part with him.

Titania’s refusal to hand him over is the catalyst of The Indian Boy, with the boy’s mysterious and almost supernatural qualities at the heart of Munro’s production.

Set in the last remnants of an ancient forest, the Indian boy has lived in the forest for years long after Oberon and Titania have faded into distant memory. Peter, a property developer, is looking to fund a large development on the edge of the woodland but is hindered by the boy’s unsettling presence. As Peter and his team try to force the boy from the forest, the forest comes to life and begins to fight back. During the ensuing battle, Peter’s true nature is revealed – outside the forest he had forgotten his true identity, but inside the forest it starts to become clear…

Colin Salmon (Julius), Christopher Fulford (Peter) and Holly Aird (June) are joined by Ryan Gage (Sparks), David Kennedy (Bricks), Rhik Samadder (Indian Boy), Roderick Smith (Chippy), Claire Cathcart (Nurse) and Ashley Madekwe (Sara).

Alongside Rona Munro on the creative team are Rebecca Gatward (director) who co-directed the RSC’s production of The Canterbury Tales currently running in London, Liz Cooke (designer), Yvonne Milnes (costume) and Matt McKenzie (sound).

A story of internal conflict and the unknown, the play runs at The Cube in the RST between the 7th and 11th November 2006.
