RSC Interactive

The RSC’s Learning department launches Exploring Shakespeare: Hamlet and Macbeth this week. This new interactive multi-media site within the learning section of the RSC website, is completely free to Broadband users.

It offers a range of approaches to the RSC’s 2004 productions of Hamlet (directed by Artistic Director Michael Boyd) and Macbeth (directed by Associate Director Dominic Cooke) and includes never before seen footage of the rehearsal process as well as interviews with actors, designers and both directors.

As well as unique access to the RSC performance process, the site also includes textual information and a range of suggestions for teaching and learning activities.

Students will be able to plot the creative choices that have been made in producing these plays. Themes, characters and staging processes are all inter-linked in a clear way that allows the user to navigate at their own pace around the site.

The themes explored in Macbeth include ‘Power and Control’, ‘Murder and Consequences’ and ‘The Tragic Hero’, and for Hamlet, ‘Sex and Violence’, ‘Secrets and Lies’ and ‘Revenge’.

Maria Evans, RSC Director of Learning said, ‘We are really excited about this project, and have already had some very good feedback from teachers who got a sneak preview of the site at our stand at this year’s Education Show in Birmingham. We’ve aimed Hamlet at Key Stage 5 (16 and over) and Macbeth at Key Stage 3 and 4 (13 to 16 year olds). However, it is open to anyone who has access to Broadband.’

The actors who took part in the project, and can be seen in rehearsal, performance and in individual interviews are Toby Stephens (Hamlet), Meg Fraser (Ophelia), Clive Wood (Claudius), Greg Hicks (Macbeth) Sian Thomas (Lady Macbeth) and Richard Cordery (Duncan), Louis Hilyer (Banquo) and Pal Aron (Malcolm).

This project has been generously supported by The Stavros S Niarchos Foundation.

Watch out for a review of this site later this week.
