Jobs Will Go at the RSC The refurbishment of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Swan, which begins next year, could lead to as many as 58 job losses at the RSC, according to a report in The Stage. This is about 8% of the workforce, although backstage staff will be most hit, with almost a third having to go. Executive director Vikki Heywood described the estimate of losses as "pessimistic" and said that the company hoped there would be fewer. Some may be able to continue working with the company on another basis, possibly on touring productions, and most of the others, she hopes, will take early retirement or voluntary redundancy so that there will be a minimum of compulsory redundancies. BECTU has entered into negotiations with the RSC and will be pushing for redundant staff to have first refusal on the jobs when the theatres reopen. They are also concerned, they say, with the possibility that, with so many job losses occuring backstage, the compamy may suffer a skills shortage. "The good news is that they (the theatres) will be reopening... those jobs will come back," Heywood told The Stage.
