Struan Leslie

Leslie Takes New RSC Post

Struan Leslie will join the Royal Shakespeare Company in the newly created post of Head of Movement.

"After twenty years as a freelance choreographer and movement director, exploring the nature of movement," he said, "it’s really exciting to come to the RSC at a time when there is so much emphasis on the future. This role presents me with the opportunity to consolidate all my previous work and focus it, particularly on the ensemble.

"To be in the same place, with the same actors, staff and directors and being part of a team across the whole organisation is very important. Instead of being someone who drops in, creates something and then leaves, I will have the opportunity to form long term relationships and set up a whole new department."

Michael Boyd, the RSC’s Artistic Director said, "I am delighted that Struan Leslie is joining. During his first few weeks with us he will combine working with me as Movement Director for As You Like It with getting his feet firmly under the table of the organisation and his new role.

"He comes to us with rich experience as Movement Director in theatre, education, TV and opera. We are thrilled that he is bringing his knowledge and experience to the RSC."

Struan Leslie started dancing with Royston Maldoom in Dundee in 1981 and continued his training at London Contemporary Dance School and Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

He has over twenty years experience of working with movement, his work ranging from Urban Design to Ancient Greek plays . In theatre his work extends from classical opera and theatre to new plays and devised work for his own ensemble thewatercompany and others.

He has collaborated with directors including RSC Chief Associate Gregory Doran, Katie Mitchell, Neil Bartlett, Philip Howard, John Tiffany, Rachel Kavanaugh, Nick Broadhurst and Calixto Bieito.

Over the last fifteen years his work has been presented in the repertoires of many companies, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, Welsh National Opera, American Repertory Theatre, Stadttheater Bielefeld, as well as at the Donmar Warehouse, Teatro Piccolo, Milan, and Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh.

He also choreographed the BBC's highly-acclaimed series Casanova.

He teaches at dance and drama schools and leads workshops for directors and actors. He has held teaching posts at the Universities of Greenwich and South Bank, and a visiting professorship at the University of Illinois.
