Dateline: 4th December, 2003 ACE Should Withhold RSC Funding, Says Assembly Arts Council England should withhold funding from the Royal Shakespeare Company until it establishes a London base, the London Assembly has said. The Assembly's Culture Committee claims that a London transfer of the Stratford season is a condition of the RSC's subsidy. "We expect the Arts Council to ensure that conditions for public funding, including a London base, are actually met," says Meg Hillier, the chair of the committee. She added that ACE should not give any money to the RSC for 2004/5 if it fails to have a full London season by autumn 2004. ACE, however, has denied that this will happen and says there are no preconditions about a London season in its grant to the company. The RSC reaffirmed its intention to find a permanent base in the capital and spoke of how it is "crucially important" to both audiences and artists. The company will announce details of a temporary home early in the new year. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
