RSC London Events

Throughout the RSC Season at the Albery Theatre there will be a diverse programme of events especially created to extend and enhance the experience of the Company. Directly connected to the repertoire, the schedule of activity offers an imaginative introduction to the work on stage and the people who create it.

To reserve tickets for these events (apart from the RSA Debate) please call the Albery Box Office: 0870 060 6621

All events below (apart from the RSA Debate) take place at the Albery Theatre, St Martins Lane, London WC2H 4AH. Nearest Tube: Leicester Square or Charing Cross

Comversations
Join actors, directors, academics and other guests in a series of conversations which explore the ideas, both explicit and implicit, contained within the world of a play. What does the language offer? What is its influence upon us? Does it affect change?

What Shakespeare Did for Us
Panel includes RSC Artistic Director Michael Boyd, Professor Jonathan Bate from University of Warwick and actor Simon Russell Beale. £5
Sat 27 Nov 11.00am – Noon

Something Rotten in the State: Can Tragedy Teach Us to be Better Citizens?
Presented in collaboration with the RSA
Tragedy and democracy emerged at the same time but does the performance of tragic drama today still help us to shape our ideas about citizenship?

The panel, chaired by theatre critic Michael Billington and including Corin Redgrave and Marina Warner, will explore what tragedies have to offer to audiences today as we look for pleasure, for hope, and perhaps, even a cure.

To reserve a free place visit www.theRSA.org/events or telephone: 020 7451 6868.
Mon 7 Feb 6.00 – 7.30pm at the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), 8 John Adam Street, London WC2

From Pain to Pleasure: Tragedy and the Body
Catharsis – the word Aristotle used to explain the very physical toll watching tragedy takes on the body. It is a term now used regularly in news reports to describe what happens when people gather to mourn after a terrible event. What happens to our bodies and brains as we watch – or indeed perform in – tragedy? £5
Fri 4 Feb 5.00 – 6.00pm

Women and War
The voices of wives, mothers and daughters resonate throughout tragic drama. To coincide with the RSC’s production of Euripides’ Hecuba, the conversation will explore women’s response to war, conflict and tragedy across the season. £5

Public Understudy Matinees
The RSC provides a full understudy programme to ensure that, wherever possible, we are able to continue performances in the unfortunate event of illness or injury to a member of the acting company. Understudy roles are agreed at the first stages of casting and our actors rehearse understudy parts throughout the main rehearsal period, in addition to their normal role.

Until now only other actors and RSC staff have been able to sit in on these performances, but this year we are opening them up to the public, giving you unique access to the work. Sometimes actors will never have the opportunity to perform the role they have rehearsed in front of an audience - for them this is a key moment of their development within the company, for you it is an opportunity to see some of the leading actors of tomorrow performing some of the most challenging roles in Shakespeare.
£2 to RSC Members, £5 to non-members

  • Fri 3 Dec Hamlet 1.00pm
  • Wed 26 Jan King Lear 1.00pm
