Mirror Offers Cheap RSC Family Tickets

On 23rd April, William Shakespeare’s birthday, the Royal Shakespeare Company, newspaper The Mirror and Prudential plc have joined forces to launch a special £20 offer for families to attend the RSC’s current productions of The Winter’s Tale, As You Like It, Julius Caesar and Twelfth Night in Stratford upon Avon, Newcastle and in London.

500 family tickets have been made available to Mirror readers. In every issue of The Mirror from Monday 27th April to Friday 1st May there will be a Royal Shakespeare Company/Daily Mirror Family ticket voucher. Readers need to collect three vouchers to claim a family ticket for up to four people.

The offer is the brainchild of the RSC’s Education department which has spearheaded a major campaign to change the way that young people are introduced to Shakespeare. Its manifesto, Stand up for Shakespeare, has garnered almost 13,000 supporters from all over the UK and worldwide.

Jacqui O’Hanlon, the RSC’s Director of Education said, "Stand up for Shakespeare talks about the importance of young people Seeing Shakespeare Live, Starting Shakespeare Earlier and Doing Shakespeare on their Feet. We know that when these things happen children and young people can go on to form a life-long relationship with Shakespeare and develop a deep love of theatre-going. We're delighted that our Shakespeare for Families promotion with the Daily Mirror gets this message out to a wider audience, encouraging families to learn together about the productions they'll be seeing and have a great day out."

To coincide with the offer, the Mirror’s feature writer Alun Palmer, has interviewed a host of RSC actors including Katherine Kelly (currently playing Becky in Coronation Street), Alistair McGowan (who appeared in the RSC’s production of Merry Wives, The Musical and has just completed a tour of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure), Kathryn Drysdale (who recently appeared in the RSC’s productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Love’s Labour’s Lost and stars in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps on BBC3), Tamsin Greig (who played Beatrice in the RSC’s production of Much Ado about Nothing and is well known for starring in Love Soup and Green Wing on TV and Debbie in The Archers on BBC Radio 4) and Cardiff born Matthew Rhys (who played Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Edmund in King Lear and Macduff in a Young People’s version of Macbeth – all for the RSC. He plays Kevin Walker in the American TV series Brothers and Sisters and is the star of numerous films including The Edge of Love). Alun has also talked to schoolchildren about what inspired them to want to watch and work with Shakespeare.

Three of the plays on offer to Mirror readers - The Winter’s Tale, As You Like It and Julius Caesar - run in The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford upon Avon throughout the summer with a ensemble which includes Sam Troughton, Greg Hicks, and Katy Stephens. These plays will then transfer to the Newcastle Theatre Royal from 20 October – 7 November. Twelfth Night is the fourth play on offer to Mirror readers. This runs in Stratford from 15 October to 21 November with Richard Wilson making his Shakespearean debut as Malvolio. There are plans then to transfer the show to London (venues and dates yet to be confirmed and announced).

The £20 Shakespeare for families tickets are subject to availability and terms and conditions apply.
