Dateline: 6th June, 2006
Japanese Titus at Complete Works Festival Japanese director, Yukio Ninagawa, returns to the RSC with the UK premiere of his award-winning production of Shakespeares bloodiest play, Titus Andronicus.
Performed in Japanese with English surtitles, Ninagawas production first played to a rapturous response in Japan in 2004. The revised production now plays as part of the RSC Complete Works Festival for ten performances from 16th June in Stratford-upon-Avon, having just completed a regional tour of Japan in April and May of this year.
Using red ribbon to magical effect, not a single drop of real blood is shed in Ninagawas production. The play, which includes interracial conflict, family discord, power struggles, murder, rape, conspiracy and cannibalism, offers a grisly take on social issues - many of which are still relevant today.
Having played Titus in Ninagawas original 2004 production, leading Japanese Shakespearian actor Kotaro Yoshida, again takes the title role. Joining him are Rei Asami as Tamora, Queen of Goths; Hitomi Manaka as Tituss daughter Lavinia; and Shun Oguri as Aaron. Performance details
