Dateline: 22nd August, 2006
Promenade with the RSC RSC associate director Dominic Cooke is to direct two of Shakespeares late plays as part of the Complete Works Festival The Winters Tale and Pericles. The same company of twenty four actors will perform both plays in the Swan Theatre in promenade. The stalls seats on the ground floor will be removed to create a huge space for actors and audience to share. More traditional seating will be available in the two Swan galleries.
Director Dominic Cooke strongly recommends that audiences take up the option of promenading: Theres no question that these shows will be infinitely more exciting and vivid for the promenaders who will physically go on the same journeys as the characters. Shakespeare so often feels remote as an experience for audiences. To find yourself as an onlooker at Hermiones trial or being a guest at the sheep shearing in The Winters Tale is a uniquely involving experience and draws you into the play. Also you are free to change position and be as close or as distant from a scene as you like. Im convinced that many people who buy seated tickets will want to move downstairs after the interval to be part of the experience. In the company are Linda Bassett, Anton Lesser and Nigel Cooke. The Winter's Tale opens in the Swan Theatre on 15th November at 1.00pm (previews from 26th October) and Pericles previews from 2nd November, opening on 15th at 7.00pm. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
