The Swan Theatre
Interior of the Swan Theatre

RST and Swan Will Close for Two Seasons

At a meeting of the Stratford Community Forum, set up by the RSC to communicate with residents and traders in the town, the company announced that both the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Swan will close for two summers (2008 and 2009) during the refurbishment period. The RST will be replaced by the temporary 1,000-seater Courtyard Theatre but the company has yet to announce how it will replace the Swan's productions. Those details, executive director Vikki Heywood said, will be announced by the summer of this year.

"We made it clear at the Forum last week that we'll supplement the Courtyard programme during transition and the plan for this will be ready by the summer," she told the BBC. "Until then, any judgement on the economic impact to the town is a wild guess."

Members of the Forum said that they did not know about the Swan's closure and they are worried about the economic impact on the town, but the company says that it was mentioned at the Town Management Partnership last October, attended by the Mayor and business leaders.

"We have always said that the Swan will close during the transformation but our commitment has always been to continue performing in the town," Heywood said.
