RSC Confirms No London Transfers

The Royal Shakespeare Company has finally confirmed that there will be no London transfers of the current Stratford season, apart from All's Well starring Judi Dench which goes into the Gieldgud from 18th February to 24th April, 2004.

The company's statment said:

Despite negotiations with a number of commercial producers, the RSC have been unable to secure a London life for productions in the 2003 Festival Season.

Actors at the beginning of the season were only contracted for performances in Stratford and Newcastle, although the RSC had hoped that some of the shows in the season might enjoy a London run in partnership with commercial producers.

Due to the current, more cautious mood of the commercial theatre in London, independent producers have been less willing than ever before to take classical work with a large cast (however acclaimed) into a commercial venue.

The RSC is unable to bring the work to the capital itself this year because of the size of its deficit – currently standing at £2.8 million. Incoming Artistic Director, Michael Boyd, has pledged to secure a new London venue for the Company to perform in next year. This situation confirms the imperative for the company to secure a regular performing venue in London; something which Michael Boyd has been committed to since taking post in April and hopes to announce early in the New Year so that this situation does not arise in the future and will give audiences the opportunity to see RSC productions in London from the autumn of 2004.
